Police in the Kigezi Region have launched investigations into a double murder that occurred at Kiriba Village, Kagunga Parish, Bufundi Sub-county, Rubanda District.

The deceased have been identified as Arineitwe Prosper, 54, and Ruhangariyo Osbert, 26.

According to the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, Arineitwe Prosper was allegedly attacked and killed by unknown assailants at around 10:00 p.m. on July 28, 2026, as he was returning home from a nearby trading centre. The attackers reportedly trailed him before stoning him to death.

Following the incident, residents reportedly suspected Ruhangariyo Osbert, who is said to have had a long-standing family conflict with the deceased. In an apparent act of mob justice, an angry crowd traced Osbert, tied his hands with a rope, and lynched him. He died instantly.

Police said the mob later abandoned Osbert’s body beside that of his uncle, Arineitwe Prosper, along a village road.

Officers from Rubanda District Police responded to the scene and transported both bodies to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations.

Police have strongly condemned the act of mob justice and urged members of the public to allow the law to take its course. They have appealed to anyone with information that could help identify and arrest those responsible for Arineitwe Prosper’s murder to report it to the nearest police station.

The police have also called on residents to remain calm and avoid speculation that could interfere with ongoing investigations, while assuring the affected families and the community that every effort is being made to bring all those responsible to justice.

Investigations into both deaths are ongoing.
